*18 Mar 2014 : Introduction to Machine Learning, and to share experiences
applying ML at Precor*
This talk will be a light introduction to Machine Learning, with demos in
Weka and Mahout. (Both Java libraries) We will focus on Classifiers and
Recommenders, mostly the practical aspects, with a bit of backing theory
(Naive Bayes, Decision Trees, etc ) The goal is to entice developers to
learn more about this exciting field of Data Science.
Speaker: Paulo Avelar
Paulo Avelar, is Currently Principal Software Engineer at Precor, where he
designs and implement cloud enabled network fitness solutions. Paulo
started toying with software as a teenager on his Timex Sinclair ZX81
around 1982 using Basic and Assembly. While still a minor, Paulo founded a
company that pioneered micro-informatics in Brazil where he sold custom
software for Apple II and TRS-80 clones. In 1998 Paulo left IBM Brazil and
moved to USA, "imported" by Rogue Wave Software to work as a member of
Rogue Wave's C++ foundation class library team, where he help to develop
Threads.h++ and later SourcePro.h++. Paulo has been working with Java since
it's early versions and is passionate about software development,
collaborative agile environments and distributed computing in general. He
currently lives in Redmond, WA and has two sons. Paulo holds BA Electrical
and Telecommunications Engineer from INATEL (National Institute of
Telecommunications - Brazil)
