Retina

First, I’d like to apologize for something I repeatedly stated earlier this year.

Far and wide, I praised the Macbook Air 13” as the single best piece of hardware, laptop, computer, personal productivity booster I had ever experienced. I truly believed it at the time. I meant no deceit.

I recently adopted a Macbook Pro 13” Retina. And learned how wrong I was. Its height and width is a bit smaller, in exchange for more depth. And 1/2 lb heavier. A far trade.

I’m absolutely in love with the 2560 x 1600 Retina display. I think I always knew I would be. But feeling the smooth font rendering gently caress my laboring eyeballs makes the experience emotional. I honestly believe I’m more productive using the Retina.

Now when I use my iMac 27” or work issued Macbook Pro (pre Retina), it feels like I’m being stabbed in the face. Unpleasant.

Now I’m desperate for the large screen Retina experience. I fear getting something non-Apple, because they seem to do the best with hardware and software integration. But I’m trying to keep an open mind.

In conclusion, I’m looking for a big ass monitor to maybe hookup to a Mac Mini.

I wonder if you could use a small 4K TV. Resolution 3940 x 2160.
A quick google found a 39-in Seiki [sic] for $700. Maybe still too big a
screen for use as a monitor, though.

You remind me that people are expecting Apple to have a new 4K offering when the new Mac Pro ships.

I hate waiting.

The point of retina is to have 200ppi or better, so bit screens with many
pixels do not work the same, it is all about density of those pixels as
related to viewing distance. so, scientifically correct measurement should
be pixel -per-degree I guess.

PS: If this is a typical day on planet Earth, humans will add fifteen
million tons of carbon to the atmosphere, destroy 115 square miles of
tropical rainforest, create seventy-two miles of desert, eliminate between
forty to one hundred species, erode seventy-one million tons of topsoil,
add 2,700 tons of CFCs to the stratosphere, and increase their population
by 263,000

As some one drooling over having more pixels than my 3 1920x1200, the
caveat w/ the 4K screens is that NONE of the current Apple (not counting
the coming new Mac Pro) will drive 4K resolution. The hardware will, but
currently the software won't!

Given how verbose Java is, a Retina screen is the only way to fit a
meaningful amount of code into one screen.

Hi Dev.
Does this post have anything to do with Java, the JVM, programming, or SeaJUG?
I apologize for my apology.

The pinnacle of human achievement in general, and UX in particular, is to make the tool invisible, an extension of ourselves. Much like how Marshall McLuhan relates how the race car becomes an extension of a driver’s awareness.

With Retina, I don’t notice the screen. It’s invisible.

I believe that lessens my cognitive burden. As well as made me a more productive programmer.

Cheers, Jason
